‘Salome’ at Teatro di San Carlo
This March, Dan Ettinger returns to Teatro di San Carlo to conduct Richard Strauss’ Salome, with performances on March 20, 23, 26, and 29.
Based on Oscar Wilde’s play, the opera follows Salome, the stepdaughter of Herod, whose dangerous obsession with the prophet Jochanaan leads to a shocking climax. Strauss’ music mirrors the story’s wild emotional swings, from seductive beauty to outright terror, with the infamous Dance of the Seven Veils and Salome’s final monologue known as some of the most gripping moments in all of opera.
This searing production, directed by Manfred Schweigkofler, features set design by Nicola Rubertelli, costumes by Daniela Ciancio, lighting by Claudio Schmid, and choreography by Valentina Versino. The brilliant cast includes Ricarda Merbeth in the title role, Brian Mulligan as Jochanaan, Charles Workman as Herod, Lioba Braun as Herodias, and John Findon as Narraboth.
